Postdoctoral position in chirped-pulse rotational spectroscopy at Argonne National Laboratory

A postdoctoral position in experimental physical chemistry is open in the Gas-Phase Chemical Dynamics group at Argonne National Laboratory with Dr. Kirill Prozument. The project is aimed at understanding the chemical reaction dynamics and kinetics using the chirped-pulse Fourier transform millimeter-wave (CP-FTmmW) spectroscopy. Two CP-FTmmW projects are ongoing in our laboratory.

1. The oxidation of hydrocarbons is investigated using a new continuous-flow SiO2/SiC microreactor at 1500–1700 K and a variety of CP-FTmmW detectors: the BrightSpec W-band spectrometer and the home-built E-band and D-band spectrometer with a fast digitizer. Understanding the mechanisms of Criegee intermediate formation in the combustion environment and exploration of alternative fuels are among the current directions.

2. Laser-induced quantum state-dependent dissociation is investigated in-situ in a flow-tube reactor using the Argonne 260–290 GHz CP-FTmmW spectrometer. The photochemistry of low-volatility formamide, methyl carbamate, and urethane are of our interest. Rates of formation specific for the products’ vibrational and rotational states are measured to learn about the transition state properties.

Argonne Gas-Phase Chemical Dynamics group provides a unique collaborative environment for experimentalists and theoreticians, and we are also open for outside collaborations.

A successful candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry, Physics or a related field and experience in one of the areas of molecular spectroscopy. Expertise in pure rotational spectroscopy is an advantage but is not required. Experience in vacuum and laser techniques is desirable. Programming skills for automating data acquisition and analysis is a plus.

This position is initially for 1 year and can be extended to up to 3 years. The position is open now and will be until filled. Both U.S. and international candidates are encouraged to apply. Interested candidates should apply using the following link at Argonne website and the job Requisition Number 415879.
