Job title: Postdoctoral Appointee
Anticipated starting annual salary: $104,900 + benefits
Location: Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, CA
Job Description: Full-time, Temporary
We are seeking a motivated postdoc to join Sandia’s Gas Phase Chemical Physics Department to work on direct experimental probing of fundamental pressure-dependent gas-phase reactions. This position will focus on several related systems, including peroxy and other free radical chemistry, hydrocarbon oxidation and pyrolysis in the low-temperature combustion regime, and plasma-assisted depolymerization reactions. The work will span a range of chemical complexity, from elementary kinetics of modeling small hydrocarbons to complex transformation of polyethylene and related plastics.
The successful candidate will gain experience in laboratory kinetics, mass spectrometry, and low-temperature plasmas. This project will engage the postdoctoral associate in a range of activities, including:
• Using multiplexed time-resolved mass spectrometry, laser-induced fluorescence, and other methods to detect and quantify key reaction intermediates and products
• Investigating chemical reactions initiated by photolysis, thermal decomposition, and non-equilibrium plasmas
• Development and application of novel chemical reactors
• Exploring the reaction pathways and kinetics of complex chemical systems using tunable VUV photoionization at the Advanced Light Source
• Presenting results at national/international meetings and publishing research in peer-reviewed journals
In addition, the postdoctoral associate will collaborate with a multi-investigator team at Sandia and Argonne National Laboratories.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must be able to work onsite at the Sandia Livermore location.
Qualifications We Require:
• PhD in chemistry, physics, or other closely related field
• Experience in one or more of the following: experimental chemical kinetics, mass spectrometry, or plasma science
• Record of collaborative research
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Qualifications We Desire:
• Experience with design and construction of experimental apparatus
• Knowledge of computational kinetics or chemical modeling
• Ability to address complex problems creatively, and to work effectively both independently and in collaboration with other researchers
About Our Team:
The Gas Phase Chemical Physics Department is part of Sandia’s Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation’s capabilities in gas-phase chemical physics. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Gas Phase Chemical Physics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the complex chemical reactions that occur either directly in the gas phase or influenced by it. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, advanced diagnostics, ultrafast physics and chemistry, chemical kinetics, multi-phase chemical physics, high-pressure combustion, and gas-surface interactions.
