Ultrafast laser scientist positions at the Central Laser Facility, Oxfordshire, UK

The Central Laser Facility (CLF) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire, is recruiting four ultrafast scientists in the Artemis and ULTRA teams, with fixed-term and open-ended contracts available. See link below for detail and applications.

The CLF has been awarded £17M funding for a transformation of their ultrafast laser spectroscopy facilities, Artemis and ULTRA (https://www.clf.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/HiLUX.aspx). This 4-year project will extend the range of techniques for ultrafast laser spectroscopy, and encompasses new lasers, detectors and sample-handling technologies.

ULTRA

The ULTRA facility specialises in high repetition-rate ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy for research in the physical and life sciences. Our techniques include multi-dimensional (2D vibrational and electronic), time-resolved Raman, vibrational sum-frequency generation and broadband transient spectroscopies. (https://www.clf.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/Ultra_Facility.aspx).

Artemis

The Artemis facility uses extreme-ultraviolet laser pulses, produced through high harmonic generation, in a broad range of experiments (https://www.clf.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/Artemis.aspx). These include time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy/photoemission and coherent lensless imaging. We plan to develop experiments on x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy.

Main components to the roles:

  • Working with external research groups using the facilities.
  • Development of instrumentation, techniques and/or software.
  • Developing your own scientific interests at the facility.
