The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.
The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. There are 15 professors at the Department.
The research performed in the field of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry is of highest international level. The current research areas are laser spectroscopy, photochemistry, gas kinetics, and computational and theoretical chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry invites applications for
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
positions starting from May 1st, 2018 at the Kumpula Campus of the University of Helsinki. The starting dates are negotiable. The research will be directed by Professor Markku Vainio and Professor Lauri Halonen. The objective is to break new grounds in experimental laser spectroscopy and laser physics.
The successful candidates are expected to carry out experimental work on laser spectroscopy instrumentation and method development particularly with mid-infrared optical frequency combs for spectroscopy and kinetics, trace gas analysis, atmospheric chemistry, medical applications etc. Recently, we have been interested in processes at different forms of water including water complexes, ice particles and the quasi-liquid layer of ice.
The laser spectroscopy group led by Professor Vainio and the molecular spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry group led by Professor Halonen consist altogether about 15 scientists, and have excellent computational and experimental facilities including commercial and home-built optical frequency combs and a new proton transfer reaction mass-spectrometer.
The salaries of the successful candidates will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointees will be paid salary components based on personal performance.
