Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Experimental Ultrafast Science

General description of position: Applications are invited for a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in the Laboratory for Ultrafast Metrology and Attosecond Science (LUMAS), led by Assistant Professor Michael Chini in the Physics Department at the University of Central Florida. Our work focuses on studies of the ultrafast interactions between intense, few-cycle laser fields with solid and gas-phase targets, and the use of time-resolved spectroscopies to track the fastest dynamics of electrons in novel materials on femtosecond to attosecond timescales. The group, established in October 2015, currently includes one postdoctoral scholar, three PhD students, and several undergraduate students, and conducts its research in close collaboration with leading experimental and theoretical groups in ultrafast and attosecond science, as well as materials synthesis and characterization. These include the attosecond science groups at UCF led by Dr. Zenghu Chang and Dr. Luca Argenti, the laser plasma group led by Dr. Martin Richardson, and the quantum materials group led by Dr. Madhab Neupane. The laboratory is equipped with a high-average power femtosecond laser system and two optical parametric amplifiers, which together provide few-cycle pulses spanning the visible to mid-infrared spectral regions, and experimental setups for high-order harmonic generation in solid- and gas-phase targets.

Job description: Current projects in the group include high-order harmonic spectroscopy in solids, time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using gas-phase high-order harmonics, and attosecond probing of atomic and molecular coherences resulting from strong-field excitation. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to one or more of these projects, while taking a leadership role on one (according to the candidate’s background and preferences). The initial appointment will be for one year with extension to two years contingent on performance. Longer extensions will be contingent on both performance and funding. The successful candidate may start as soon as Sept 1, 2018. The salary is $50,000 plus benefits, and the successful candidate will receive a $5,000 annual stipend for research-related travel and computational resources.

Required minimum qualifications: The candidate must have: 1) a Ph.D. in experimental ultrafast AMO or condensed matter physics, or related fields (candidates on track to complete their Ph.D. in or before spring 2019 will be considered); 2) a track record of original contributions to the scientific literature; 3) a demonstrated ability to collaborate with others and work independently; and 4) fluency in written and spoken English.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who can take service on or before January 15, 2019, and who have experience in one or more of the following areas: strong-field physics and high-order harmonic generation; attosecond spectroscopy; and/or development and application of ultrafast laser and parametric sources.
