Post-doctoral Fellow in Experimental Ultrafast Science

in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 498502)

Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in Experimental Ultrafast Science in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 498502), to commence as soon as possible for two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a related field, with an excellent C.V., publication and research record.  They should have experience in experimental ultrafast science including, but not limited to, ultrashort, high power laser pulses, optical spectroscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy; and experience in programming and/or device interfacing.  They should also have strong motivation to work in a competitive and challenging environment and be eager to learn.

The appointee will conduct research in the area of high-order harmonic generation from condensed matters in the newly established group led by Dr. Tran Trung Luu.  The group aims to: (i) push forward the state-of-the-art research in light-solid interaction by combining high-fidelity control of input light fields and precise characterization of radiated light; investigate electronic structure and electronic dynamics in solids using Attosecond Optical Spectroscopy; and (ii) explore possible means to develop light-solid interaction into a versatile source to facilitate ultrafast science.  Enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr. Luu at ttluu@hku.hk.  Information about the group is available at (https://www.physics.hku.hk/~ttluu/). A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.

Experimental PhD position in ultrafast science in The University of Hong Kong

Applications are invited for appointment as PhD candidate in the Department of Physics, to commence as soon as possible.

Background and motivation:

Light-matter interaction in the strong field regime has led to generation of high-order harmonics and thereby facilitated the creation of attosecond (1 as = 10-18 seconds) science. Recently, high-order harmonic generation from condensed matters has been demonstrated and become an active research field. In our newly established group in The University of Hong Kong, we aim to:

(i)             Push forward the state-of-the-art research in light-solid interaction by combining high-fidelity control of input light fields and precise characterization of radiated light. Attosecond Optical Spectroscopy will hopefully be a powerful tool in investigate electronic structure and electronic dynamics in solids.

(ii)            Explore possible means to develop light-solid interaction into a versatile source to facilitate ultrafast science.

– Experience in experimental ultrafast science and/or programming is a plus.
